Abstract

863,010. Semi-conductor devices. SIEMENSSCHUCKERTWERKE A.G. Nov. 5, 1958 [Nov. 15, 1957],No. 35551/58. Class 37. In a semi-conductor device, e.g. a rectifier, transistor, or photo-diode, in which the electrodes are formed by alloying bodies consisting of gold with a minor addition of a doping substance to a monocrystalline body of semiconductive material such as silicon, germanium, or an inter-metallic compound of elements of Group III and V of the Periodic System, each electrode is subsequently remelted and, while molten, contacts a conductive lead which becomes connected fast to the electrode when the latter resolidifies. The leads may comprise wires or strips of silver or copper which are preferably gold-plated to a thickness of a few microns, as by electrolysis, and which may be joined to all the electrodes of the device in a single heating operation. The device, with the leads disposed on the electrodes, is heated to a temperature slightly above the melting-point of the gold-semi-conductor eutectic (about 360‹ C. for Au-Ge; about 370‹ C. for Au-Si) in a vacuum or an inert gas.
