Abstract
862,932. Matches. INLAND N.V. June 27, 1958 [July 30, 1957], No. 20770/58. Class 50. A match having an inflammable ignition mass in the form of a head on a splint of combustible material is characterized by having the splint consisting at least partly of a mass of finelydivided vegetable and synthetic material. The vegetable material may, for example, be paper pulp, wood pulp, wood fibres or powder, sawdust, flax waste, straw, rapeseed stems, leaves, and stems of plants; the synthetic material is suitably cellulose acetate. The splint mass may contain glue and starch as agglutinants, and zinc oxide, glass powder, chalk, gypsum, asbestos powder, and charcoal as fillers. In addition the combustible mass may include resins, e.g. colophony and shellac, paraffin wax, tobacco, fats, strontium nitrate, potassium chlorate, pyrolusite, borax, phosphoric acid, and ammonium phosphate. The splints may be produced as sticks, or as tubes, shells, or pipes in which case they are preferably closed at the end remote from the head, and may be produced in a porous or sponge-like form. The splints may have a round, triangular, square, rectangular, polygonal, or oval cross-section and may consist of more than one portion. For example, the portion remote from the head may be rendered non-combustible by inclusion of asbestos or glass powder, while the portion near the head is rendered highly combustible with potassium chlorate, shellac, and/or colophony, and cannot be blown out once lit. Such separate portions of the splint may also be coloured differently.
