Description

Patented Sept. 13,1938
SELF-HGHTING CIGARETTE John Biddle, Whitwick, England, assignor to Morris Margolis, London, England Claims. (on. 52-25) The subject matter of the present invention consists in improvements in and relating to self lighting cigarettes or cigars which are provided with an igniting tip which is applied to the end i of the cigarette or cigar and which has a composition such that it ensures ignition of the cigarette and that the combustion of the tip has no deleterious effect on the flavor or aroma of the tobacco smoke. The binder and adhesive of the i) tip material is, in that case, gum acacia.
Now although, generally speaking, the cigarette above described is satisfactory, the igniting tip sometimes becomes detached from the cap owing toimperfect adhesion. It has now been found 8 that the adhesioncan be greatly improved by incorporating a certain quantity of starch in the igniting composition, which is applied to the cap as a paste that is made with water or some other suitable liquid. The addition of the starch also :0 has the eflect of considerably reducing the sparking which occurs on igniting the tip.
In an example of the present invention, the igniting composition which can be applied to both sides oi the cap has substantially the following compositions:
Parts by weight Chlorate of potash (K0103) 11V Gum acacia 2 30 Starch 2 Manganese dioxide (MnOa) 1% Silica (S102) 1% Carbon (C) 'I It has also been found that the surface on which 35 the ignition tip of the cigarette is struck or rubbed has a longer useful life-i. e., can ignite a larger number of cigarettesif given substantially the following composition:
40 Parts by weight Red phosphorus (F) 5 Antimonium nigrum or black antimony trisulphide (SbzSa) 1 Gum acacia l 4 Carbon (C)--- 1 cigars having substantially the following compo- Parts by weight Chlorate of potash (KClOa) 11 Gum acacia 2 Starch 2 5 Manganese dioxide (MnOz) 1% Silica (SiOg') 1 Carbon (C) 'l 2. it composition of matter for use as an ignitm ing substance consisting substantially of the following constituents in theproportions by weight,
as muows: Parts by weight Chlorate of potash (K0103) 11 Gum acacia 2 l5 Starch 2 Manganese dioxide (MnOz) 1V2 Silica (SiOz) 1 /2 Carbon (C) 'l 3. A composition of matter for use as an igniting substance consisting of the following ingre- Parts by weight Chlorate of potash (KClOs) 11 /2 Gum acacia 2 Starch 2 Manganese dioxide (MnOz) 1 /2 Silica (S103) 1 Carbon (C) 7 Parts by weight Chlorate of potash (K0103) 11 /2 Starch 2 Manganese dioxide (MnO-z)- 1V2 Silica (S102) 1 /2 Carbon (C) 7 and gum acacia.
5. A self-lighting cigarette or cigar having an ignitingtip including a cap on the end of the cigarette or cigar and on said cap an igniting 5 composition consisting of the following constituents in the proportions, by weight as follows:
Parts by weight Chlorate of potash (KClOa) 11% Starch 2 Manganese dioxide (MnOa) 1V2 Silica (8102); 1% Carbon (C) 7 and gum acacia.
