` A. GHATELAN. GOMPOSITION FOR LIGHTING GIGARS.
NO. 594,677. Patented Nov. 80, 1897r INVENTOR M UNITED STATES PATENT- OFFICE.
ALFREDoi-IATELAN, or BUTLER, PENNSYLVAIA.
coMPoslTloN FOR LIGHTING cloARs.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters' Patent No. 594,677, dated. November '30, 1897.
v Application filed July 19, 1897. Serial No. 645,134. .(Nospecimen's.)
To a/ZZ' whom it may oncern:
Be it known that I, ALFRED CHATELAN, of Butler,-in the county of Butler and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement vin Compositions for Lighting Cigars and Cigarettes, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, 'reference being had to Ithe. accompanyi-ng ered and protected by the wrapper4, .which is preferably applied by all adhe'sive.
The device consists of two parts, the-first part `being,` a readily-combustible material which ignites the .tobaccoand is adapted to burn to a red coal, and the second-part consisting of an outer head which is adapted to be lighted by friction and thus ignite the other 1ayer. I compound the first layer, preferably, in the following manner: I first dis-` solve a suitable amount of resin in'a readilyev'aporating liquid, such as acetic other, and then add thereto peroxid of manganese, permanganate of potash, and chlorate of potash. -The three lastnamed elements are the essential parts of the inner layer, and I preferably add thereto powdered coke, cinnamon-bark,
a-nd asmall amount of shredded cotton. The
- ether is then allowed to evaporate, leaving a tionally-igniting material, though I prefer to use the following ingredielts: amorphous phosphorus, common phosphorus, saltpeter, and chlorate of potash.- These materials may be mixed up withan'adhesive and a small portion of the same applied to the cigar or cigarette outside the other composition.
w In order t'o prevent accidental igniting of the prepared artic1e',I preferably wrap about the outer end of the same a layer of vthin paper or tobacco-leaf 4, this being. preferably applied by an adhesive after'the other materials have become dry. `Thi wrapper prevents accidental ignition and may be removed when the cigar is to be lighted.
The' advantages of my invention result mainly'from the particular composition employed for the inner layer, as this composition will .burn slowly-to a red coal and insure the fignition' of thetobacco, while nodeleterious odors or fumes are produced. The resin employed is an important element, as it prevents moisture injuring the ingredie'nts of the inner laer and Waterproofs the same.-
'1.v A cigar or cigarett'e having at its end a. combustible composition containing peroxid of manganese, permanganate of potash and chlorate of potash, and an outer frictionallyigniting head.: f
- 2. Av cigar or cigarette having at its end a combustible composition .covmposed of peroxid of manganese, permanganate'of potash, chlorate of potash, 'powdered coke and vcinnamonbark,'and an outervfrictionally-igniting head. w 3'. A cigar or cigarette having at its end acombustible composition containing peroxid of manganese, permanganate of potash, chlora'teof potash and a waterproofing material,
and an outer frictionaly-igniting head.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set myhand. p ALFBED. cHA'rELAN. Witnesses: M, S. MURPHY; H. 'M. CoRw-m.
