To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that l, DoN G. VALE, a citizen of the United States, residing in Salem township, in the county of 'Meigs and State of Ohio, have invented new and useful Improvements in Self-Lighting Cigars. of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in self-lighting cigars of that type comprising a tip, consisting of a cap of combustible material and a frictional igliiter secured to the cap.
One object of my invention is theprovlsion of itself-lighting cigar, wherein the cap of the tip comprises inner and outer members, the inner member adding such rigidity and strength to the cigar end and securing the tip in applied position in such manner as to prevent the cigar from breaking, or the tip from becoming detached during the operation of igniting the car.
Another object of my invention is the provision of a self-lighting cigar with. a tip, composed of a' highly combustible outer member, and an adhesive inner member.
The fumes arising from the combustion of" the tip, are prevented from entering the cigar by the inner member of the cap. The inner member 3 also secures the tip in ap-.
plied position, and adds strength and rigid- I ity to the cigar end.
\Nith the foregoing and other objects in view, my invention consists in the construction, combination and arrangement of parts described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings embodying my invention :Figure' 1v is a view of a cigar provided with my improved combus' tible tip, and Fig. 2 is a'centra'l, vertical longitudinal sectionalview of the same.
' In the accompanying drawings, the reference character 1 designates a cigar, to the end of which is secured a tip 2. The tip 2 comprises a cap which consists of an inner member 3 and an outer member 4. The inher member 3 serves to rigidly secure the cap to the cigar end and to strengthen the outer-end of the cigar. A drop of suitable match compound 5, is placed on the surface of the cap 4, thus affording a means with which to frictionally ignite the cap.
In practice the inner member 3 is formed by dipping the end of the cigar into a solu tion of glue or other suitable adhesive sub.- stance, which contains a certain amount of saltpeter. The cigar end is allowed to become thoroughly saturated before it is re- .moved fromsaid. solution. Y The end of the cigar having been provided with the inner member 3 of the cap, is now ready for the application of the outer member 4 of the v cap.v A proportionate amount of powdered charcoal, glue saltpeter, starch and water are mixed into a plastic compound. The end of the cigar provided with the inner member 3 is then dipped into this plastic mixture, which forms the outer member 4 of the cap. The cap is thus secured to the cigar and allowed to dry, after which a drop of suitable match compound, such as used for frictional matches, is placed on the surface of the cap 4 to provide a frictional igniter 5. It will be apparent from the above de scription, taken in connection with the accompanying drawing, that the tip is of simple construction, that it may be readily and quickly applied and that it will not materially ipcrease the cost of the cigar. I claim v As an article of manufacture, a self-lighting cigar embodying a cigar body of tobacco, an inner layer of adhesive material containing saltpeter and applied to the end of the body in such manner as to seal said end and also impregnate the same and form a supporting filler therefor, an outer layer or cap applied upon the inner layer and around the impregnated and filledend portion of the cigar and composed of charcoal, saltpeter and a binder therefor, and a tip of match compound. applied to said outer layer 01 cap.
