To all whom it may-concern Be it known that I, CARLOS EDUARDO RODRIGUEZ, a subject of Venezuela, now residing at 1142 East Thirty-fifth street, in the borough of Brooklyn, county of Kings, and State of New York, have made a certain new and useful Invention Relating to-Ignitwith a phosphoric igniting surface to light the cigarette, the igniter having a flat body in direct engagement with the ignition end of the cigarette filler while a cooperating protecting securing cap of thin sheet metal may be used to secure the igniter in position and simultaneously protect the same. This cap preferably has an attaching flange crimped into engagement with the cigarette wrapperand has a central hole in its end through which the projecting tip in the igniter may extend so as to act more readily.

In the accompanying drawing showing in a somewhat diagrammatic way an illustrative embodiment of this invention Figure 1 is a side view of the cigarette shown partly in section. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the igniter alone; and Fig. 3 is a similar view of the securing cap.

The cigarette or cigar to which the igniter is applied may as indicated in Fig. 1 have a ,paper or tobacco wrapper 1, arranged around the filler 2, in the usual way. The

i gniter suitably formed of any desired igniting composition may be formed with a flat body 8, preferably directly engaging the end of the'filler 2, at the ignition end of the cigarette and having an integral projecting tip 6, connected as through the neck 7, with the igniter body so as to be more readily ignited by scratching or rubbing it over a phosphoric igniting surface. The igniter may be secured in position and simultaneously protected by a suitable securing cap such as 3, of suitable thin sheet metal or foil which may have an integral attaching flange 4, crimped down into close securing engagement with the Wrapper 1 in any suitable device producing the crimps or folds 10, shown in Fig. 3. This cap preferably has a central opening or hole 5, which may be located substantially centi ally in its end and through which the igniter tip :6, may projeot, as shown in Fig. ,1. It is also desirable -1n some cases though not absolutely necessary to interpose a washer 9 of paper or the like between the igniter and cap and this washer may be conveniently secured to the igniter when it is molded.

' A desirable igniting composition for this purpose may comprise 8 arts of charcoal, 16 parts chlorate of potas 1 part sulfid of antimony,-10 parts zinc white, 6 parts bichromate of potash, 2 to 3 *parts of glass all in powdered form and thoroughly incorporated. Then the adhesive medium made of 5 parts of glue part of flour and 2 to 3- parts of gum arabic dissolved in a suitable quantity of water are incorporated and the mass thereby given a semifluid of plastic consistency suitable for molding or forming the igniters. The ignitersformed of this composition, when dried and hardened, may be used in connection with any suitable cooperating phosphoric igniting surface such for instance as is used with ordinarysafety matches. These self igniting cigarettes or cigars may thus be readily lighted by first before the end of'the cigarette is burnedand the cap falls off with theashes on the cigarette end, the thinness of the capmaking it free from any substantial objection on this score. I

Having described this invention in connection with a number of illustrative embodiments, forms, proportions, materials, methods of preparation and arrangements of parts, to the details of which disclosure the invention is not of courseto be limited, since what is claimed as new and what is desired to be secured by Letters Patent is set forth in the appended claims.

Claims:

1. The igniting cigarette, comprising a safety igniter of igniting material adapted to cooperate with a phosphoric igniting surface and having a flat igniter body adapted to directly engage the ignition end of the filler, a cooperating protecting securing cap of thin sheet metal having an attaching flange crimped .into engagement with the wrapper and having a venting hole in its end, a'projecting tip on said igniter eirtend f ing through said hole and apaper washer interposed between said cap and igniter and secured to said igniter outside said tip.
