HABRY IBABGMAN, OF LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA.
IfUSE-IGNITER.
-Spec1flcation of Letters Patent.
Patented Jan.4:', 1910.
Application filed J'ime 14, 1909. Serial No. 5013 96.
' To all whom it may concern."
Be it known that I, HARRY BARGMAN, a citizen of Russia, residingat-Los Angeles, in the county of Los An eles and State of California, have invente certain new and useful Improvements in Fuse-Igniters, of
" which the following is a'specification.
This invention contemplates an improvement' over my fuse i iter, described and claimed in my co-pen ing application, filed Apl. 26, 1909, Serial Number 492,374.
It has for its object to provide for the instantaneous ignition of the powder in the owder duct of a fuse, and to preserve the use ends against moisture, and the lighted fuses against extin ishment.
Another object 0 this invention is to pro vide a means for instantly communicating ignition" to the powder in a fuse, ,which means is unaffected by mine-drippings or water, and which is highly, economical on account of the cheap material from which the resent-igniter may be manufactured.
T ese and other ob ects are accomplished by the embodiment of the invention in thevarious forms illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which, i
Figure 1, is an elevation, partly in section, showing a tubular igniter provided with a rubber sheath. Fig. 2, is a side'elevation of the same, showing the rubber sheath unfurled and extended over the joint between the cap and the fuse.
Specific referencebein had to the drawing, 1, designates a tubu ar body having a lighting tab 2, and 3' apowder charge wlthin said ca and in proximity to said tab2. Said tubuihr body consists of celluloid, collodionized paper, or fibrous material, saturated or coated with a highly inflammable substance, such as gun-cotton and the .like, whereby the same is rendered quickly ignitible and at the same time insured against the action of the atmosphere and moisture.
By coating a paper or fibrous tubular body with a solution highly sensitive to heat, the combustion of the same after the ignition is retarded, while the heat is transmitted to the powder charge confined within the tubular body. In this manner the tubular body forms a guide for the direction of the flame resulting from the combustion of the powder, and the heat is confined within the walls of the body and carried down into tact for a small period of time, until-the flamefrom the powder has been projected -into the powder duct. The tab or apex of the tube is however, sufiiciently susceptible to the action of direct heat to become ignited immediately upon the application of the. same thereto, but in order'to absolutely insure the s eed ignition of 'the end of the cap, I pre er to thin the tab. This invention therefore, is primaril directed toward the provision of a means or preventing the ingress of water at the joint between the bottom of the cap and the fuse.
T01 the cap 1, is attached one end of an elastic sheathv or shield 4, which is rolled up on the tubular body and is' arranged to remain in such rolled up condition until required for use. When the tubular bodyhas been placed uponthe end of the fuse 5, the rolled up rubber or elastic sheath is urifurled until it covers the entire cap and a portion of the fuse, as seen in Fig. 2. In
this condition, immersion in Water or exthe free ,end of a fuse, a powder charge within said body, and a cover secured to said body and adapted to be unfolded longitudinall of said body to cover the joint between the body and the fuse. 1 2. An igniter adapted to be fitted over the free end of a fuse, comprising a tubular body having confined therein a powder charge, and an elastic covering on said body,
said covering being arranged to be unfolded and engage a portlon of the fuse.
3. A tubular body of inflammable mate- I rial adapted to fit over and forin a seal for the free end of a fnsejsa-id tubular body be-.
ing provided with a foldablecover.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature in the presence of two witnesses." 1
