To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 'I, ALoNzo E. PORTER, a citizen of the United States,.and a resident of Pompton Lakes, county of .Passaic, and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fuses, of which the following is a full, clear, and ex act description.
This invention relates more particularly to fuses for exploding dynamite.
The primary object. of the invention to provide a simple and efficient device in which the terminals for igniting a fulminate or explosive may be properly held Within a metallic shell or casing, and so arranged that the fulmiiiate will be properly protected from moisture or Water in order that the same may be made to cause the fuse to explode dynamite or other explosives.
A further object of the invention isto provide simple and etlicicnt water-proof fuse in ,which the terminals. may be held in an absorbent or compressible material so as to properl. seal and inclosc a fulminate withina cas 1g".
\Vitlr these and other objects in view, the invention will be hereinafter more particularly described with reference to the aceonr panying drawings, which form a part of this specification, and will then be pointed out in thetlaims at. the end of the description.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a side elevation of oneform of device embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section, partly in elevation, of the device shown in Fig. 1. Fig. '8 is a plan view of Fig. I. Fig. 4 is aside elevation of a different form of fuse casing. Fig. 5 is a'plan view; and Fig. 0 is alongitudinal section, partly in elevation, of the fuse shown in Figs. 5 and G.
The device 10 has a tubular shell or casing 11', provided with a substantially cylindrical. body portion 1'2, the lower end of which is closed, as at 13, and withinlhc body portion 12. is arranged a fulunuate 14 which may consist of compressed powder 15,
and loose or free powder 16 as is usual, and
. within the body portion 1'2 is adapted to be forced a plug 17 of wood, cork, softwhite or cork pine or other material. This plug or member 1 i may have a plurality of holes 18 through which pass the ends o-f the terminals 19 and 20 which may lieconnected FUSE.

to any suitable source of electric supply. in order that the current through the terminals may cause the fuhninate to explode as is usual in fuses of this character, the said terminals being connected by a platinum wire 21 or other means to cause the fulminate to be i nited.
The casing 10 above the cylindrical body portion 12 is provided with anv annular rib 22 forming an inner annular groove above which is arranged an enlarged mouthpiece or end 23, which at its lower end is .in-n.

The element 17 when of cork will prevent all moisture from pas ng by the same, and when wood is used it vii to gather any moisture and prevent-the same from reaching the terminals or the fulminate, and the said wood plug may be forced so as to be compressed within the body porll act as an absorbent tion, or may be made to simply lit the same tight or in any other desired way. By this means the fuse becomes waterproof, and overcomes the objections to fuses as o'rdi: narilv' constructed.
\Vhen the fuse is in use it, is ordinarily placed in a stick. of-dy' na'mite or otherwise arranged .so that when the current is made topass through the terminals 19-and 20, the

the concussion will explode the dynamite in the usual manner. From the foregoing it will be seen that simple and efliclent means are provided whereby an inexpensive effective fuse is made thoroughly waterproof so that all possibility of the fuse not igniting the explosive mixture is overcome no matter whether the said fuse is submerged in water or not; that said construction permits the fuse vto be used in the usual manner; and
is not injuriously affected bv that said fuse is so made that it will keepand be ready .for use after many years as 1t moisture or similar conditions.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent:-- v
1. A fuse comprising a casing having a substantially cylindrical body portion with one end closed, an enlarged mouth portion having an inclined lower part, and an annular rib formlng an annular groove below the mouth portion, a fulminate contained within the casing, terminals arranged in the casing, :1 pl member having openings therethrong for the reception ofthe ends of the terminals and adapted to be passed into said 'pressible material holding weather,-

2. A fuse comprising a casing having a body portion, an enlarged mouth portion having an inclined lower part, and an annular rib forming an annular groove within the casing below the mouth portion, a fulminate within the casing, terminals arranged in the casing, and a lug member having 0 enin 's therethrough or the reception of t e en s of the ter'mlnals.
3. A fuse comprising a casing having a. body portion, an enlarged mouth portion, and anannular rib below the mouth'portion,
a fulminate within the casing, terminals arrangedin the casing, a plug member of comthe ends of the terminals and adapted to seal the body portion of the casin above the fulminate and filling arranged a (We the plug member.
4. A fusecomprising a casing having a substantiallycylindrical body portion with one end closed, an enlarged mouth portion having an inclined lower'part, and an annular rib forming a groove below the mouth portion, a fulminate within the casing, terminals arranged in the casing. a wood plug member holding the ends of the ternunals adapted to be passed into the casing through the o en end and a filling arranged above the lilg member within the casing.
