Abstract

862,595. Making pressure-exchangers. POWER JETS (RESEARCH & DEVELOPMENT) Ltd. April 7, 1959 [April 17, 1958], No. 12203/58. Class 83 (2). In making a cellular structure having inner and outer cylindrical members 1, 2 and walls 3 extending between the members, the walls are secured along one edge to the inner member 1 and along their opposite edges are located in slots 4 in the outer member 2 and secured therein along substantially the whole length of the slots from the outside of member 2. As applied to making the rotor of a pressureexchanger having radial or curved walls 3, these are each secured in the outer slot or slots 4 and in an inner groove in the member 1 by welding, brazing or furnace brazing. Alternatively, slots 4 may also be provided in member 1 for each wall or alternate walls. The member 1 is assembled on a mandrel 9 between sleeves 13 and discs 10 which locate rings 15 having radial grooves to receive the walls 3, which are then welded &c. to member 1. The assembled members are removed and may be stressrelieved before being remounted on the mandrel without sleeves 13 and the clamping nuts 19. Bolts 11 clamp the assembly while the outer edges of the walls 3 are ground. The bolts are then replaced by the sleeves 13 and nuts 19, and the assembly located in the outer member 2, which has axial grooves 8 to receive the walls 3 and form the inner parts of the slots 4. The walls are then welded to member 2 and may be cooled by the passage of air through openings 14 in the discs 10. Rods 18 in castellations in the discs and rings 10, 15 prevent distortion during welding. Disassembly from the mandrel and discs follows before the exchanger is heattreated, machined on the outer surface and the unslotted parts 6 are removed.
