Abstract

763,229. Magnetic couplings. TORMAG TRANSMISSIONS, Ltd. Nov. 13, 1954, No. 32937/54. Class 35. A magnetic coupling comprises a driven member having a sleeve 10 with a flange 20 supporting an annular rim carrying two rows of circumferentially spaced permanent magnets 24 and a driving member comprising two cylinders 32, 34 of dissimilar metals rigidly joined together and to a supporting end plate 28 which is rotated by a motor shaft 2. The outer cylinder 32 is preferably of mild steel while the other cylinder 34 is made of copper or aluminium and then joined together by rivets 35 staggered along two circumferential rows as in Fig. 2 (not shown) so as to reduce radial buckling of the cylinder 34 when heated and to permit the latter to expand transversely toward spaces 49 provided near the ends of this cylinder. The cylinders 32; 34 together with their end flanges 37, 38 are so located with respect to the magnets that they form a housing 40 for the magnets. These flanges 37, 38 have fins 45, 46 on their outer faces to direct cooling air to the end faces of the housing 40, vanes 45, 46 on their faces and vent orifices 48 as in Fig. 4 (not shown). Moreover, the end plate 28 has a circular row of openings 30 coinciding with openings 21 provided in the flange 20 carrying the magnets 24. Specification 763,230 is referred to.
