Abstract

912,423. Shaft couplings. BIRFIELD ENGINEERING Ltd. June 4, 1959 [June 5, 1958], No. 17959/58. Class 80 (2). [Also in Groups XXVI and XXXI] A splined shaft 2 is mounted for reciprocal movement within a splined cylinder 5, for example as in a motor vehicle propeller shaft, the end of the cylinder being sealed by a plate 4 and the space filled with lubricant, a bellows 6 being sealed against the cylinder and shaft at 9 and 10 respectively, so that lubricant passes from the space between the cylinder and shaft and into the bellows and back again with reciprocal movement of the shaft. A spline may be removed to facilitate the passage of the lubricant. The bellows member is secured to the cylinder and shaft by clamping rings 7 and 8 and is moulded in a partially axially collapsed state, as shown in different embodiments in Figs. 2 and 4, to which state it tends to return after distortion. In the embodiment of Fig. 2, a locating rib 11 is formed and in Fig. 4 the bellows member has a reinforcing spring 15, In the embodiment of Fig. 3 a circlip 18 prevents disengagement of the shaft 2 and cylinder 3.
