Abstract

753,520. Positive clutches. ENGLISH ELECTRIC CO., Ltd. Nov. 5, 1954 [Nov. 11, 1953], No. 31213/53. Class 80(2) In a clutch wherein a shaft 1, Fig. 1, is moved axially to engage splines 1a with chamfered ends lb, between splines 3a with chamfered ends 3b in a member 3, a ring 2, mounted for limited axial and angular movement within a housing 4 secured to member 3 but normally in its left-hand position shown with internal splines 2a having chamfered ends 2b in alignment with the splines 3a, has a pair of diamondshaped projections 2e each of which cooperates with opposed recesses 3e, 4e in the members 3, 4 offset by half the spline pitch and with the chamfered ends of a pair of spring-loaded segments 5, Fig. 3. The arrangement is such that if, when engagement is attempted, the splines 1a abut. against the splines 2a, as in Figs. 4a, 5a, the ring 2 is moved to the right, the projections 2e forcing apart the segments 5 until their springs 6 impel the ring further to the right and turn the same during the process due to the offset recesses 3e so that the splines 1a are now guided between the splines 2a, as in Figs. 4c, 5c, and eventually between the splines 3a, the necessary relative angular movement between the parts 1, 3 being produced by the chamfered ends 1b, 3b. As the engagement is completed, the splines 1a having passed completely through the ring 2, the latter returns to its Fig. 5c position so that, on disengagement the splines 1a abut against the splines 2a to re-set the ring 2 in its Figs. 4a, 5a position. Specification 691,413 is referred to.
