Abstract

Copolymers containing a major proportion of acrylonitrile are prepared by copolymerizing a major proportion of acrylonitrile and a minor proportion of ethylene sulphonic acid or a salt thereof in p a solvent for the monomers that is also a solvent for the copolymers. Minor amounts of additional comonomers, e.g. methyl acrylate, vinyl acetate and styrene, may also be used. The solvent may be dimethyl formamide, or aqueous solutions of sodium thiocyanate or calcium thiocyanate. Polymerization may be effected in the presence of catalysts, e.g. azobisisobutyronitrile, and the products used in the manufacture of fibres having improved dyeing properties.
