Abstract

A copolymer of acrylonitrile and a monomer or monomers including a compound of Formula I <FORM:1068507/C3/1> wherein R is H or CH3 and M is H, Na, K or Li. Polymerization may be carried out in aqueous dispersion or in an organic solvent using a free radical catalyst. Copolymers exemplified contain acrylonitrile, the compound of Formula I and methyl acrylate or the diethyl ester of bicyclo[2.2.1]hept - 5 - ene - 2,3 - dicarboxylic acid, or 2-nor camphanyl acrylate, vinylidene chlorides, N-isopropyl acrylamide, vinyl chloride, N,N-dimethylacrylamide or methyl methacrylate. The copolymers may be spun into fibres and dyed with basic dyes.
