Abstract
Salts of methacrylamido-methanesulphonic acid having the formula CH2=C(CH3)CONHCH2SO3A where A is an alkali metal, are prepared by reacting N-methylolmethacrylamide with alkali metal pyrosulphites at 50-60 DEG C. in aqueous solution. The salts are used for preparing emulsion copolymers (see Division C3).ALSO:Water-insoluble, cross-linkable copolymers are prepared by the emulsion polymerization, in an aqueous medium containing a polymerization catalyst and an emulsifier, of a mixture of monomers containing, as cross-linking component, an alkali metal salt of methacrylamido methanesulphonic acid having the formula CH2=C(CH3)CONHCH2SO3A where A is an alkali metal. The copolymers can be cross-linked by heating to only 95 DEG C. Examples describe the preparation of copolymers of (1) n-butyl acrylate, styrene and sodium methacrylamido - methanesulphonate and (2) n-butyl acrylate, acrylonitrile and sodium methacrylamido - methanesulphonate in the presence of an alkyl sulphonate emulsifier and an ammonium persulphate/sodium pyrosulphite catalyst, additional monomer being added during the polymerization process.ALSO:Textiles, fibre materials and leather are coated with water insoluble, cross-linkable emulsion copolymers comprising as the cross-linking component an alkali metal salt of methacrylamido-methane-sulphonic acid having the formula CH2=C(CH3)CONHCH2SO3A where A is an alkali metal. The cross-linked coatings are fast to washing and dry cleaning.
