Abstract
Solutions of polyacrylonitrile or copolymers containing at least 80% of acrylonitrile are obtained by polymerizing acrylonitrile, with comnomers, if desired, in a concentrated aqueous solution of an inorganic thiocyanate at a pH of 3.5 to 8 in the presence of an azo initiator and a reducing agent having the formula:- <FORM:1030212/C3/1> where R is alkyl, substituted alkyl or hydrogen, and X is a cation or hydrogen, e.g. d-xyloascorbic, erythroascorbic and araboascorbic acids and salts thereof. Azobisisobutyronitrile is specified as an initiator. Comonomers specified are methyl acrylate, vinyl acetate, vinyl pyridine and styrene. When the reaction is carried out in contact with a ferrous metal the pH of the polymerization mixture should be from 6 to 8.
