Abstract

Solutions of polymers are prepared by polymerizing one or more vinyl compounds, such as acrylonitrile, acrylic acid and methyl acrylate, in an aqueous solution of a thiocyanate salt under ultra-violet light radiation in the presence of complexing agent which is a water-soluble compound which, when dissolved in water, forms with any multivalent ions which may be present a compound in which metal is no longer ionized, e.g. acetyl acetone, ethylene diamine, tetra-acetic acid and polyethyleneimine.
