Abstract

The redox polymerization of an ethylenic monomer to produce a water soluble polymer, using a chelatable metal reducing agent and an impurity chelatable cation is carried out in the presence of (a) a chelating agent which complexes the impurity chelatable cation faster than the reduced form of the reducing agent, and (b) a chelatable cation which is inert to the polymerization and which is complexed slower than the impurity chelatable cation but at a rate at least equal to the reduced form of the reducing agent. The polymerization inhibiting effect of the impurity chelatable cation is thus eliminated. An example of (a) is E.D.T.A. and an example (b) is Zn<+2>. Suitable impurity chelatable cations are Fe<+3> and Cu<+2>.
