Abstract
In a modification of the process of the parent Specification acrylonitrile polymers containing at least 80% acrylonitrile are prepared by dissolving the acrylonitrile with or without other monomers such as styrene, methyl acrylate, itaconic acid, vinyl acetate or vinyl pyridine in a concentrated aqueous or acqueous/alcoholic solution of an inorganic thiocyanate and polymerizing the monomer or monomers in solution at a pH of 4 to 8 in the presence of a non-oxidising polymerization catalyst forming free radicals which is an azo compound and in the presence of a cuprous salt and a reducing agent which is inert to the azo compound under the polymerization conditions. The reducing agent may be thiourea dioxide and the cuprous salt may be added as such, e.g. cuprous thiocyanate, or as a cupric salt, e.g. copper sulphate. The effect of the cuprous salt is to reduce the molecular weight of the polymer produced. The azo catalyst may be azobis-isobutyronitrile and ammonia and sodium hydroxide may be added to the polymerization solution to adjust the pH value. Fibres may be spun from the polymer solutions and ribbons and films may also be produced. Specifications 824,361 and 864,096 are referred to.
