Abstract

Ampicillin trihydrate is prepared by precipitating ampicillin in the form of a hydrate thereof containing at least one but less than three molecules of water per molecule of ampicillin from a solution of ampicillin in an aqueous water-miscible polar organic solvent medium, said medium containing up to 20% by volume of water and subsequently treating the resulting precipitate with an excess of water to produce ampicillin trihydrate. Ampicillin may be dissolved in aqueous acetone at pH 1 to 4, clarified and an inorganic or organic base added to pH 4 to 7 until a precipitate forms. This is washed with an organic solvent and then treated with excess water in order to produce the trihydrate.
