Abstract

Sulphopropyl and sulphobutyl gelatins are prepared by reacting gelatin in aqueous alkaline media with propane sultone and butane sultone respectively. The product is recovered by acidfying. The process may be carried out in the cold (45 DEG F.) for several days, or in the warm (50 DEG C.) for 30 minutes. The sulphoalkyl gelatins have less desensitizing action than untreated gelatins when used for photographic purposes.
