An apparatus for reducing the liquid content of wet loose solid material comprises a trough, the bottom 4 of which is apertured forming a screen on to which is material fed from the upper screening apparatus 1 (which may be according to Specifications 791,520, 791,857, 791,858 and 791,859) between a cake of solid 11 already in the trough and a reciprocating pusher 5 having a stroke less than the length of the screen, so that when the trough is filled with solid material such material is advanced along the screen in a series of stepwise movements to be discharged at 12 on to a belt conveyer. The pusher 5 is actuated by a pneumatic piston and cylinder 6 and 7 and a collecting box 8 is provided under the screen 4 with a discharge pipe 9. The trough may be straight or curved lengthwise in the vertical plane and its sidewalls may diverge upwardly. The angle of the trough may be varied with respect to the horizontal and it may be widened towards its discharge end. Two or more pushers may be provided with common driving gear, which may be mechanical, hydraulic or pneumatic, so that they make their propulsion strokes in succession.
