Abstract

[Also in Group XI] Tubular fabrics are set by a process comprising the steps of continuously drawing the fabric over a stretcher shaped to the desired final dimensions of the fabric, the fabric being first heated and then cooled during its passage over the stretcher. As shown in Fig. 1, the fabric 7 is drawn on to a rectangular sheetmetal stretcher plate 1 by grooved rollers 3 cooperating with a frame 9 comprising the lower end of the stretcher, is heated by resistance elements 5 within a reflector box 6, and is allowed to cool before being drawn off the stretcher by rollers 4 and fed to a reciprocating folding device 12. The stretcher in the embodiment illustrated in Fig. 3 comprises a central cylindrical portion 16 surrounded by circular resistance elements within a cylindrical reflector box 6, together with upper and lower portions 17 and 18 which gradually taper to form extended straight edges 20 and 19, respectively. The stretcher of each embodiment is such that its circumference at every point along its length equals the desired peripheral length of the set fabric, and in each case provision is made for varying the size of the reflector box 6 to accommodate stretchers of varying sizes.
