940, 339. Stretching tubular fabrics. BENTELER-WERKE A.G. Aug. 15, 1961, No. 29451/61. Heading D1S. Apparatus for expanding a tubular web 1 of knitted fabric comprises a ball ring 3 succeeded by a roller rectangle 5 over which the web is gradually drawn and widened, and two stirrups 11 over which the web passes in flat condition, the web being stabilized by guiding over rollers 14 pressing it into grooves 15 in counter-rollers 16 and then being continuously passed on for further processing. The ring 3 preferably consists of twelve wooden balls strung on a circular wire and the web is opened thereby to a substantially circular crosssection 4. The roller rectangle 5 comprises four rollers 8 mounted on a frame 7 and supported by four driven rollers 10 so that the web is opened into rectangular cross-section 6. The fabric then passes over rollers 12 on the stirrups 11 pivoted at 20 and which are urged apart by lazy tongs 18, Fig. 1, having tension springs 19 or rubber or synthetic plastic bands causing them to extend outwardly. The rollers 14 are mounted on holders 17 attached to the lazy tongs 18 and are pressed thereby into the grooves 15 in the driven counterrollers 16 to stabilize the fold lines of the flattened tube. Rollers 30 mounted on arms 29 which may be spring urged outwardly retain the web 1 in the stretched condition. The bearings of the rollers 16 are connected to bearings 23 each having a threaded nut engaged on right-hand and left-hand screw threads on a spindle 24 to adjust the position of the rollers 16 driven by bevel wheels which are axially displaceable either by bearings 23 through a fork or by spring pressure. In a modification, Fig. 5, variable weights 19' are provided on the lazy tongs 18 connected by ball rings 40. In a further modification, Fig. 4, a cylinder 32 having a piston 33 loaded by an adjustable spring 34 is connected by a cylinder 45 to cylinders 36, 37 having piston rods 38a, 39a connected to the holders 17 to urge the rollers 14 outwardly.
