714,073. Stretching and tensioning yarns. BRITISH ENKA Ltd., STONE, E., SPARKE, E. J., and MULDOWNEY, J. P. June 25, 1952 [July 28, 1951], No. 17940/51. Classes 120(2) and 120(3) A device for applying stretch to textile yarn comprises two rotatable rollers tapered in the same axial direction about which the yarn is passed in axially spaced convolutions, means for guiding the yarn to the tapered rollers and means responsive to the increasing size of the package being wound for varying the position of the guiding means so as to vary the extent to which the yarn is stretched dependent upon the size of the package. A pair of stepped godets 6 and 7 are mounted on diverging and coplanar shafts 24 and 25, the position of the right-hand end of the shaft 25 being adjustable so as to vary the angle of divergence. Yarn is taken from a package 13 through a tension gate 14, and over the tapered portions of the godets 6 and 7 from which it is led in a bight around pulleys 8 and 9 and back to the portions of the godets 6 and 7 of larger diameter and is then taken up on a cheese former 2 of a coning machine. Between the pulleys 8 and 9 the yarn passes through a steaming tube 10 to which steam is admitted through an inlet 11 and escapes through the open ends. The yarn is guided on to the former 2 by a button guide 23 which is reciprocated on a traverse head 3. The traverse frame 4 is angularly displaced by the increasing size of the package. Yarn is guided to the' godets 6 and 7 by a guide eye 17 mounted upon the tension gate 14 which is pivoted at 27 and biased in a clockwise direction by a weight 28 and spring 29 attached to a fixed post 31. A wedge member 30' guided in a groove 32 in the post 31 limits the clockwise rotation of the tension gate and is pivoted at 33 to the balance weight 34 of the traverse frame 4. As the package 2 increases in diameter the wedge 3 is gradually withdrawn causing the yarn to be led on to the godets of smaller diameter, the rate of feed-in of the yarn being gradually reduced whilst the rate of withdrawal of the yarn remains constant and the degree of stretch increased.
