Abstract

A process for the manufacture of hydrogen peroxide by the alternate, successive, hydrogenation, oxidation and water extraction of alkylated anthraquinones or their tetrahydro or halogenated derivatives is carried out using as solvents for the anthraquinone a compound of the general formula: <FORM:0862272/III/1> wherein n = 1 to 2 R is hydrogen, or an alkyl, or alkoxy, group containing 1-2 carbon atoms; R1 is hydrogen or an a -acyl group, containing 1-4 carbon atoms, and the total number of carbon atoms in the side chain <FORM:0862272/III/2> is less than 11. The Specification refers to several specific solvents, b -phenylethyl alcohol and b -tolyethyl alcohol or their esters being preferred. Use of the solvents of the invention in admixture with hitherto known solvents for the process is also referred to.
