Abstract

A process for the manufacture of hydrogen peroxide by the alternate, successive hydrogenation, oxidation and water extraction of alkylated anthraquinones and/or the tetrahydro derivatives thereof dissolved in a solvent, is carried out using a solvent comprising a nuclearly alkylated acetophenone, methyl cyclohexyl ketone or acetonaphthone wherein the alkyl substituents contain in total from 4-9 carbon atoms for the acetophenone and from 1-4 carbon atoms for the methyl cyclohexyl ketone and acetonaphthone derivatives, or a ring chlorinated derivative of the alkylated acetophenone, methylcyclohexyl ketone or acetonaphthone. Solvents preferably have a density differing by at least 0.3 from that of water to facilitate separation of the aqueous hydrogen peroxide extract from the working solution. Examples of suitable solvents are specified, alkylated acetophenones, particularly p-tert-butyl acetophenone being preferred. Specification 758,235 is referred to.
