Abstract

Caesium is separated from an aqueous solution by adding a bromide and bromine to the solution, thus forming caesium polybromides, contacting the solution with a water-immiscible solvent for caesium polybromides and removing the caesium from the solvent. The removal of caesium may be effected by first eliminating bromine from the solvent, when the caesium polybromides break down to monobromide which is insoluble in the solvent. The preferred method for the removal of bromine is by steam stripping as this introduces an aqueous phase in which the monobromide is soluble. The bromine is preferably added in the waterimmiscible solvent, e.g. nitrobenzene. To ensure that the solvent is always heavier than the aqueous phase it is convenient to add a dense inactive diluent, e.g. 12% carbon tetrabromide, 15% sym-tetrabromoethane or 15% bromoform.
