Abstract
A p-xylyl-bis-ether of cellulose is disclosed. The compound may be made by treating cellulose in liquid ammonia with metallic sodium to form a cellulosate, and then etherifying with a ,a 1-dibromo-p-xylene. The product is yellow with a green fluorescence which persists in acid and alkaline solution. The compound can be xanthated, formed into viscose, and spun in an acid regenerating bath in conventional manner to produce regenerated filaments and films having the original fluorescence. Blends of the compound with conventional viscose may be spun. In a preferred method, one part by weight of cellulose is treated at -40 DEG to -50 DEG C. with 125 parts by weight of liquid ammonia, 0.212 parts by weight of sodium metal added, and the mixture stirred until the blue colour disappears. 0.244 parts of a ,a 1-dibromo-p-xylene is then added, and the mixture stirred at -45 DEG C. for five hours, and then left overnight. The ammonia is allowed to evaporate and the product acidified with acetic acid, washed and dried.
