Abstract
861,304. Applying adhesive tape. ADHESIVE TAPES Ltd. Jan. 15, 1959 [Oct. 15, 1957], No. 32142/57. Class 73. A machine for applying and severing adhesive tape 41 from a reel 19 to a polygonal container that is clamped and rotated has a retractable taping arm 10 which is advanced to the container, retracted after the container has rotated a small distance and advanced again towards the end of rotation to apply an overlap of the tape. A carton 40 advances down a gravity conveyer 1, 2, 3, operating stops (e.g. 31) which cause it to be delivered and halted on the section 2. The carton is gripped between plates 8 of clamps 7, which are mounted on the cheeks 13 of a bridge structure astride the conveyer and rotated downwards about a horizontal axis by pneumatic rams C7. The arm 10 is then pivoted downwards about a cross-shaft 11 by rams E3 whilst the arm 16, whereby a taping roller 17 is pivoted to the arm 10, is held by a ram F2 in the position shown in Fig. 2 so that the roller 17 carries the free end of the tape into contact with the carton 40. A pinion 23 engaging a rack 22 moved by a ram H2 starts to revolve the clamps 7 through a drive 25 whilst the conveyer section 2 is hinged clear downwards about its pivot 4 by a ram G2. The rams E3 now retract the arm 10 and the ram F2, the arm 16 whilst the taping continues under tension, as in Fig. 6. The rams E3 again advance the arm 10 on to the face of the carton it first touched. The advance is slow due to a restrictor in the exhaust circuit of the ram and an overlap X is formed. A ram K2 then advances a knife arm 20 to cut the tape as in Fig. 8, leaving a length of it around the roller 17 ready for the next cycle. The arm again retracts, the section 2 hinges up, and the carton is released from the clamps and continues along the conveyer. The pneumatic system, including a cam shaft system by which operation of some of the rams is timed is fully described in the Specification and illustrated in Fig. 9 (not shown).
