[Also in Group XXII] Mechanism for feeding blanks to a press comprises a platform 21, a feed member 13 disposed above the platform and having formed in it an aperture or recess to accommodate at least part of a blank resting on the platform, means operable in synchronism with the press to move the feed member between a loading position in which the aperture or recess is above the platform and a position in which the aperture or recess is above the press die 20, and to cause the feed member to dwell and then to lift, while in the latter position. A guide 11 is pivotally attached, at one end to lugs 10a on the body 10 of the press. The feed member 13 is attached to a slide 12 by an arrangement of bolts 16 and slotted brackets which enables it to be adjusted in three dimensions relatively to the slide. In the loading position, Fig. 1, the aperture in the feed member 13 is beneath a magazine containing a stack of blanks 14 of which the lowermost rests on the platform 21. When a shaft 24 is rotated, through a link 26 from the crankshaft of the press, an actuating arm 28, through a link 29, advances the slide 12 along the guide 11 to the delivery positions, Fig. 2. The arm 28 is rotated by the shaft 24 through an overload clutch 30, Fig. 5, so that when, at the end of its travel, it is arrested by an adjustable stop 35 the feed member 13 dwells with the blank above the fixed die 20 of the press. One arm 27a of a bellcrank, also rotatable with the shaft 24, then makes contact with an adjustable stop 32 at one end of a plunger 13 and advances the plunger, causing a cam surface 31a on the plunger to raise a vertical push rod 34 which in turn tilts the guide 1 upwards about its pivot resulting in the feed member 13 rising clear of the blank 14 on the die, as shown in Fig. 2. The press then rotates the shaft 24 in the opposite direction, causing retraction of the slide and feed member. Back at the loading position, the other arm 27 of the bellcrank makes contact with an abutment plate 33 on the end of the plunger 31 which is thus retracted also, moving the cam surface 31a from beneath the plunger 34 so that the guide 11 drops back to the horizontal. This movement is made positive by the engagement of a roller 40 with the underside of a head 31b on the plunger 31, the roller 40 being mounted on a stirrup 39 depending from the guide 11. To prevent the blank from jumping out of the aperture in the feed member 13 as it is advanced towards the die, a pivoted arm 41, Fig. 6, is caused, by a spring 42, to bear on the blank, this arm being swung clear, as the feed member moves to the loading position, by meeting a brigde piece 19 which forms part of the magazine. Rollers are positioned to steady the guide and to locate the feed member accurately.
