1330219 Bookbinding machines HARRISINTERTYPE CORP 7 Oct 1971 [19 Oct 1970] 46745/71 Heading B6A A book clamp assembly 10 Fig. 1, attached by support means including brackets 11a, 11b, Fig. 6, to a link 11c of an endless chain 11 for movement along and endless track formed by guides 12, 13 and intended for coping with signatures of different thicknesses includes a stationary clamp assembly 30 and a pivotable clamp assembly 40 whose clamping plate 44 is moved in parallel disposition relative to a fixed clamp plate 31 over the range of thickness of signatures. The book clamp assembly 10 has its support means provided with upper and lower sets of guide rollers 16, 17, 18 and 19, 20 for movement along the guides 12, 13 and the movable clamp assembly 40 is mounted pivotally on a shaft 41a supported by end brackets 33 fast with the support means. The movable clamp plate assembly is actuated by a bellcrank lever 50 pivoted by an arm 70 against the bias of a spring 72 when a cam follower 71 cooperates with a cam bar 22, the bellcrank lever 50 being pivoted clockwise to rock the clamping plate 44 upwardly out of contact with the clamp plate 31. Rocking of the clamping plate is effected by means of an arm 60 fast with the shaft 41a and provided with a cam slot 62 engaged by a cam follower 63 associated with the bellcrank lever 50, the shape of the cam slot 62 and a spring 51 interconnecting the pivotable clamp assembly 40 with the bellcrank lever 50 in conjunction with a telescopic rod assembly 80a to 80f being arranged such that to begin with the clamp plate 44 is moved away from the clamp plate 31 in parallel relationship with respect to the latter until the vertically disposed clamp plate 44 abuts the adjacent edge of the pivotally raised arm 43 of the clamp assembly 40, whereupon the plate 44 is pivoted with the arm 43 whilst the rod assembly, forming initially part of a parallelogrammic linkage, is compressed.
