Pieces 2 of folded laundry, delivered by a conveyer 1, are stacked with one edge in a common vertical plane defined by a vertical abutment surface 5, by fingers 4 which extend through a grating in the surface 5 and are displaceable from a position inclined to the surface 5, and aligned with the conveyer 1 wherein they receive a laundry piece, to a horizontal position in alignment with the top of the stack 18, and are then retractable through the surface 5 to deposit the piece 2 on to the stack 18 which moves downwardly by the thickness of a laundry piece, whereafter the movements of the fingers 4 are reversed to the initial inclined position thereof. The fingers 4 are pivotally attached to a lever 7 pivoted at 8 to the machine frame 9 and the displacements thereof, which are initiated by a contact 17 actuated by a laundry piece 2 delivered from the conveyer 1, are obtained from pneumatic cylinders 11 and 14 which respectively actuate the fingers 4 in the vertical plane and their retracting and advancing movements through the surface 5. The downward movement of the stack 18 is obtained either by suspending the table 3, on which it is formed, by tension springs, or supporting it on compression springs, which deflect under the increasing weight of the stack 18. In an alternative embodiment (not shown) the stack is formed on a framework of fingers which is displaceable into position beneath the fingers 4 when in their horizontal position.
