Abstract

The invention comprises disulphonamides of the formula <FORM:0860371/IV (b)/1> and alkali metal salts thereof, wherein X is bromine or chlorine and R is methyl, ethyl, n-propyl or isopropyl, and their preparation by the action of ammonia on the corresponding 5 - chloro- or bromo - 1 - alkylbenzene - 2:4 - disulphonylchloride (obtainable by the action of chlorosulphonic acid on the corresponding m-halo-alkylbenzene), followed by conversion to the alkali metal salts, if desired.ALSO:Pharmaceutical compositions comprise 5-halo-1-alkylbenzene - 2 : 4 - disulphonamides of the formula <FORM:0860371/VI/1> wherein X is chloro or bromo and R is alkyl group of 1-3 carbon atoms and a pharmaceutical carrier. The products may be administered orally, for example as tablets, troches or lozenges containing conventional excipients or they may be administered parenterally, for example in the form of their alkali-metal salts in a sterile, isotonic solution. Examples describe tablets containing 5-chlorotoluene-2 : 4-disulphonamide, and aqueous isotonic solutions of alkali-metal salts of 5-chlorotoluene-2 : 4-disulphonamide.
