Abstract

The invention comprises compounds of the formula <FORM:1060694/C2/1> wherein A is a halogen atom or a C1- 4 alkyl radical and R1, R2 and R3 represent hydrogen atoms or C1- 4 alkyl radicals, and their preparation by treating an appropriate 1,7-unsubstituted thiochromane with an oxidizing agent such as hydrogen peroxide in acetic acid to form a thiochromane - 1,1 - dioxide, reacting this product with chlorosulphonic acid and treating the resulting sulphonyl chloride with ammonia or an amine R1NH2. 2 - R2 - 3 - R3 - 6 - A - Thiochromanes are made by condensing a p-halo- or p-alkylthiophenol with a substituted acrylic acid R2.CH : CR3.COOH; cyclising the resulting b -phenylthiopropionic acid derivative e.g. b -p-tolylthio-butyric acid to give a 4-thiochromanone and reducing e.g. by Clemmensen or Wolff-Kishner reaction to the thiochromane. Pharmaceutical preparations having diuretic activity comprise the above compounds of the invention and an excipient. The preparations may take conventional solid or liquid forms, e.g. tablets.
