Abstract

Pressure-sensitive tape adhesives comprise the heat-reaction products of (1) copolymers of (a) acrylic acid esters of non-tertiary alkyl alcohols having 1 to 14 carbon atoms, the average being 4 to 12 carbon atoms, and at least a major proportion of the molecules having a chain of at least 4 carbon atoms terminating in the hydroxyl group, said chain containing at least half the carbon atoms in the molecule, and (b) 2 to 12% by weight of (a) and (b) of at least one monoethylenically unsaturated monomer selected from acrylic, methacrylic acid, itaconic acid, acrylamide and methacrylamide; and (2) organic peroxides soluble in the copolymers. Specified esters are methyl, ethyl, propyl, isoamyl, isooctyl, n-decyl, tetradecyl and fusel oil acrylates. Optionally, minor amounts of butadiene, isoprene, diallyl phthalate, vinyl chloride and methacrylate esters may be used. Specified peroxides are benzoyl peroxide and cumene hydroperoxide. The copolymers may be prepared in solution, e.g. in ethyl acetate using benzoyl peroxide as catalyst, or emulsion, e.g. using alkylated aryl polyether sodium sulphonate as emulsifier, tertiary dodecyl mercaptan as modifier and potassium persulphate-sodium bisulphite redox as catalyst. The polymers may be dissolved, e.g. in heptane and propyl alcohol, and coated on to cellulose and polyester films or paper, and reaction with the peroxide effected in situ on drying the coating.
