Abstract
Polymer beads are produced by polymerizing an ethylenically unsaturated monomer or a solution of a polymer in such a monomer, in an aqueous suspension containing finely divided Ca, Ba or Sr phosphate + polyvinyl alcohol and/or a phospholipid such as lecithin. Preferably the pH of the suspension gradually decreases during the polymerization with the final pH, however, being above 5.8. The monomer may be a vinyl aromatic compound such as styrene, vinyl chloride, vinylidine chloride, vinyl acetate or propionate, an alkyl ester of acrylic or methacrylic acid, acrylonitrile, butadiene, chloroprene or a mixture thereof, and the polymer may be natural rubber, polybutadiene or a rubbery copolymer of butadiene with styrene, acrylonitrile or an isoolefine. In examples the phosphate may be formed in situ and monomer/polymer solution may be partially pre-polymerized in mass. Optional reaction ingredients are dodecyl mercaptan as modifier, acetic acid and acetates as buffering agents and sodium alkyl sulphates as surface active agents. The addition of catalyst (benzoyl peroxide) in two stages is described.
