Abstract

The properties of aqueous dispersions of vinyl ester polymers are improved by polymerizing therein at least one ethylenically-unsaturated monomeric compound having the structure <FORM:0838943/IV (a)/1> where A may be H, a C1-C4 alkyl or substituted alkyl group, a carboxymethyl or esterified carboxymethyl group or a halogen atom, and B may be H, an alkyl or substituted alkyl group, an esterified carboxyl group or a halogen atom, e.g. acrylic, methacrylic, alpha-chloroacrylic crotonic and itaconic acids and monoalkyl maleates and fumarates, which may be used in conjunction with co-monomers such as vinyl esters, esters of acrylic acids, acrylonitrile, acrylamide, styrene, vinyl toluene, maleic, fumaric and itaconic diesters, vinyl and vinylidene chlorides and vinyl pyrrolidone. Vinyl ester polymers specified are polyvinyl acetate and copolymers of vinyl esters with monomers such as vinyl chloride and esters of acrylic, fumaric and maleic acids. Polymerization may be carried out with the aid of initiators such as hydrogen peroxide, tert.-butyl, cumene and p-menthane hydroperoxides, benzoyl and lauroyl peroxides, persulphates and azo-diisobutyronitrile, which may be used in conjunction with activators such as formaldehyde sulphoxylates, ferrous ions and dithiosalicylic acid. The resulting dispersions may be thickened to a paste-like consistency by the addition of alkalis or ammonia. Plasticizers, stabilizers, &c., e.g. dibutyl phthalate and carboxymethyl cellulose, may be added to the dispersions.
