Abstract

753,882. Maleimide derivative polymers and copolymers. UNITED STATES RUBBER CO. March 22, 1954 [May 25, 1953; May 25, 1953], No. 8260/54. Class 2 (5). [Also in Group IV (b)] The invention comprises resinous polymerizates of which the monomeric constituents are composed of a maleimide derivative of the formula where Z is hydroxyl, chlorine, bromine, thiocyano, carbamyloxy, acyloxy, alkylamino, arylamino or piperidino, with or without other monomers, especially an ethylenic compound having a terminal non-conjugated CH2 = C# group. The amount of maleimide derivative may be as low as 1 per cent but is preferably at least 5 per cent by weight. The resins are thermosetting to an insoluble infusible state by cross-linking. The polymerization is effected with the usual free-radical catalysts, especially benzoyl peroxide. Examples show the polymerization of N-methylol-maleimide and N- acetoxymethyl-maleimide and of the following copolymers: (1) N-methylol-maleimide with styrene, vinyl acetate, 2-ethylhexyl acrylate, vinyl n-butyl ether, vinyl chloride, acrylonitrile, methyl methacrylate, n-butyl acrylate, α- methylstyrene, isobutylene, allyl acetate, octene-1, isopropenyl acetate, 2-methyl-5-vinylpyridine, vinylidene chloride, methyl vinyl ketone and diethyl fumarate; (2) N-chloromethyl-maleimide with styrene, vinyl chloride and acrylonitrile; (3) N-thiocyanomethyl-maleimide with acrylonitrile, 2-methyl-5-vinyl-pyridine and vinyl chloride; (4) N-anilinomethylmaleimide with styrene; (5) N-dibutylaminomethyl-maleimide with styrene; (6) N-piperidinomethyl-maleimide with styrene; (7) N- phenylcarbamoyloxymethyl - maleimide with styrene; (8) N-acetoxymethyl-maleimide with styrene, vinyl acetate, vinyl chloride and acrylonitrile; (9) N-propionyloxymethyl-maleimide with methyl vinyl ketone; and (10) N-(#- carboxy-propionyloxymethyl)-maleimide with styrene. Other suitable co-monomers are acrylic compounds CH 2 : CVY, where V is hydrogen, methyl or chlorine and Y is -CN, -COOR or -CONR 2 , R being hydrogen, alkyl, alkenyl, cycloalkyl, aralkyl or aryl, CH 2 : CV-CH 2 -OH and esters thereof with monobasic and dibasic acids, vinyl esters and vinyl - pyridines. Examples of these types are mentioned. Other specified maleimide derivatives are the N-diethylaminomethyl, N-di-n-butylaminomethyl, N - butyryloxymethyl, N - benzoyloxymethyl and N-trifluoroacetoxymethyl compounds.
