Abstract
860,213. Electric heating elements. BALDWIN, A. W., Aug. 6, 1959 [Aug. 8, 1958; Oct. 20, 1958]. Nos. 25494/58 and 33399/58. Drawings to Specification. Class 39 (3). A heating element comprises a number of superimposed layers of a mixture of carbon and a metal having a positive temperature coefficient of residivity coated on an insulating support, for example, fibre-glass cloth, or mica flake and/or fibre-glass impregnated with a thermosetting resin. The deposits are applied by spraying or printing to discrete areas of the support and preferably joined in series by zinc strips; metal foil terminal tags may also be provided and the whole assembly enclosed in a further layer of the same material as the support. The deposit is preferably applied in six layers as a slurry of 74 parts by weight of graphite and 26 parts of finely particulate silver or nickel. Alternatively a slurry is formed by mixing together an aqueous solution of graphite and silver nitrate, the metal salt being decomposed after filtering by being baked in a graphite crucible. The individual graphite particles are thus coated with the metal and the slurry is formed by suspending the particles in alcohol, naptha or water. The overall coefficient of resistivity of the element may be either sign or zero, and the number of layers. coated on the support may be varied depending on the resistance per square desired. The heating element is suitable for use in ovens, panel heaters, as a de-icing means in aircraft and similar medium temperate equipment.
