Abstract
787,581. Electrical surface heating elements. NAPIER & SON, Ltd., D. Sept. 6, 1955 [Sept. 17, 1954], No. 27050/54. Class 39(3) [Also in Group XVI] In forming an electrical surface heating element including a metallic resistance 'heating layer, a stencil is used for indicating the portions of an insulating supporting member to be covered with the metallic layer which layer is prevented from covering the remaining portions of the; supporting member by means of masking tape. A stencil for use in producing deicing or anti-icing means on an aircraft wing part A is formed by applying two or more layers of glass cloth C impregnated with thermo-setting plastic material in fluid state to the part A which is already coated with an insulating layer covered by a separating or " release " agent. After curing or permitting the plastic material to cure, the composite sheet C<SP>1</SP> is removed and slotted C<SP>3</SP> to form a stencil which is used in marking the wing by a dye sprayed through the stencil. After removal of the stencil, masking tape is applied to the wing in a pattern indicated by the dye markings, and the wing is sprayed with a metallic spray. Finally, the masking tape is removed, leaving conducting strips G to form the heating element over which an outer insulating layer is applied. Terminals are provided.
