Ausführungsbeispiel des erfindungsgemässen Heizele- me,ntes erläutert.
Electrical Heating Element The present invention relates to an electrical heating element with an insulating base on which a carbon-containing layer is applied and a method for its production.
Although carbon is a suitable conductive material for electrical resistors and heating elements for many purposes because of its high specific resistance and chemical stability, it has a fairly high negative temperature coefficient of resistance, which is a disadvantage in certain applications.
The purpose of the present invention is to create an electrical resistance or heating element with an insulating base on which an electrically conductive carbon-containing layer is applied and a temperature coefficient of the resistivity that has the desired value in a wide range (positive, negative or zero).
Furthermore, this heating element should be waterproof, allow easy and economical shaping, allow temperatures of <B> 3500 </B> evenly over the entire surface, and should not oxidize. be completely insulated and can be used in electric cookers, sterilization systems, curing ovens, heating of press molds, vulcanizing presses, aircraft ducking systems, aircraft kitchen stoves, room heating walls, and general medium-temperature systems.
The heating element according to the invention is characterized in that the layer has a plurality of layers lying one on top of the other, all of which contain carbon and a metal with a positive temperature coefficient of the specific resistance.
The base is preferably a thin layer of a glass fiber fabric or of micro-flakes and / or glass fibers which are impregnated with a heat-resistant thermosetting plastic.
Likewise, the carbon-containing layer can be covered with a protective layer made of a glass fiber fabric, or of micro flakes and / or glass fibers, which are impregnated with a heat-resistant thermosetting paste, this thermoset also serving to attach the protective layer to the base.
The support layer can have carbon and metal particles mixed with one another, which have a positive temperature coefficient of the specific resistance. The metal is preferably silver or nickel, and the ratio of metal and carbon is chosen so that the desired temperature coefficient of the specific resistance of the heating element is obtained. However, the overlay layer preferably contains particles which contain carbon and metal. Thus, the particles made of colloidal graphite encased with metal can be best, the metal in this case preferably being silver.
The method according to the invention for the production of the heating element is characterized in that carbon particles in the form of colloidal graphite are mixed with a solution of a metal compound that decomposes the metal compound in order to deposit the metal aside from the carbon particles,
and that successively several superposed layers of metallized carbon particles are applied to an electrically insulating base. The metal preferred in this process is syllable, which has a fairly large, positive temperature coefficient of the specific resistance. A preferred Metallver bond is a salt such as, for. B. Silver nitrate. The metal compound can be decomposed by heat, e.g. B.
a mixture of carbon particles and a solution of the metal compound is dried by moderate heat, and the product thus obtained is heated to at least the melting point of the metal and then cooled. If the mixture consists of carbon particles and silver nitrate, it can be brought to a temperature of <B> 8700 </B> after it has been dried. This heating of the metal to at least the melting point of the metal seems to have the effect that the metal is brought into coherent form, where the particles are more or less completely enveloped.
The product thus obtained is conveniently pulverized and passed through a sieve and the resulting powder is placed in a liquid carrier; by successive spraying on or application, the various coating layers are applied to an electrically insulating base.
The ratio of the carbon particles and the metal compound in the mixture can be selected so that the positive temperature coefficient of the specific resistance of the metal partially or completely compensates or overcompensates for the negative temperature coefficient of the carbon. As a result, these support layers can have a specific resistance which decreases less with an increase in temperature than a layer consisting entirely of carbon, or is independent of the temperature or increases with increasing temperature.
In order to create a uniform heating element, it is necessary to form the resistance layer with a number of very thin layers which together do not exceed <B> 0.25 </B> <U> mm </U>. The silver-coated carbon particles must never be partially isolated from the synthetic resin, as would be the case if a mixture of carbon and graphite or graphite and thermoset were made. In this case the contact layer of the conductive material would be tight and the resistance could not be influenced in a deliberate way.
In order to produce such an element, it is often desirable to cover the entire base with the material, leaving narrow strips or spirals free, with relatively moderately unheated areas.
Metastrip, e.g. B. made of zinc, can be brought above or below the support layers in order to obtain electrically conductive connections to the layers or between the layers. The edition can layers on the base z. B. by spraying on or by printing with a carbon and the metal containing liquid Sus pension are applied.
Using the accompanying drawing, a. Embodiment of the inventive heating element, ntes explained. They show: FIG. 1 a perspective, dissected view of the heating element, FIG. 2 a cross section of the heating element.
In the figures, <B> 1 </B> denotes a base made of a glass fiber fabric or of microfiber. and <B> '/ </B> or glass fibers which are impregnated with a thermoset. On the base <B> 1 </B> several support layers 2 of considerable width and surface, consisting of graphite and metal, are applied. These support layers 2 are obtained by spraying on or by application by means of a roller onto a base of a liquid suspension which contains carbon and metal, as described below. The support layers 2 are formed by metal strips <B> 3, </B> z.
B. made of zinc, which overlap the support layers 2 and zen obtained by Aufsprit, electrically connected in series. Terminal strips 5 made of sheet metal protrude from the base, which strips can be glued to the base and are connected to the end support layers 2 by metal strips 4, e.g. B. of zinc, connected; the latter overlap the support layers 2 and the, strips, <B> 5 </B> and can also be obtained by spraying on.
The, support layers 2, the strips <B> 3, </B> 4 and <B> 5 </B> are separated by a protective layer <B> 6 </ B> covered, which are made of a glass fiber fabric or micro flakes and, or glass fibers, which are impregnated with a thermoset and attached to the base <B> 1 </B> by means of a thermoset.
According to an exemplary method for producing the heating element described, the glass fiber fabric is thoroughly cleaned and a suspension of metal and carbon particles is applied to it by means of a printing machine so that the overlay layers 2 are formed.
The suspension applied in this way can be a mixture of 74 parts by weight of colloidal graphite in alcohol or naphtha and 26 parts by weight of the finest silver or nickel particles in alcohol, with enough liquid being present to produce a paste becomes. After a first carbon-containing layer has been applied to the substrate <B> 1 </B>, one or more additional layers are applied by letting the substrate <B> 1 </B> pass through the printing machine a corresponding number of times. The mixture can be diluted with alcohol or naphtha.
In any case, it should be intimately mixed by stirring or by a circulating pump and kept on the base until it is applied.
The laminar structure obtained in this way is hardened for <B> 16 </B> hours at <B> 900 </B>, followed by a slow increase to <B> 2500 </B> after about six hours, whereupon this temperature is maintained for two hours.
In another exemplary method, a suspension of fine carbon particles, e.g. B. in the form of Mexican Amorphous Graphite, which is brought into the trade by Graphite, Products Limited, manufactured in an aqueous solution of silver nitrate. <B> 1350 g </B> amorphous graphite is intimately mixed with a solution, containing <B> 170 g </B> mixed in 1.4 liters of distilled water dissolved silver nitrate. The suspension is filtered through a fine sieve, e.g. B. <B> 80 </B> meshes per centimeter of length, sieved.
The sieved solution is dried on a water bath, subjected to a heat treatment in a graphite crucible in a vacuum or in an inert atmosphere in a muffle furnace for two hours at <B> 8700 </B> and then cooled in the muffle furnace. The resulting mass is pulverized and using a sieve of z. B. <B> 80 </B> meshes per centimeter length screened.
The powder produced in this way, consisting of metallized graphite particles, is expediently coated with a liquid carrier, such as. B. alcohol, water or naphtha, mixed with a colloid is added so that the metallized graphite particles remain sus pended. Such a suspension can contain 20 percent by weight of metallized graphite particles. The consistency of the suspension can be changed by varying the amount of the liquid carrier, so that the suspension z. B. can be applied by printing or by spraying.
The suspension obtained in this way is then applied to a base, which consists of a thin. Layer of electrically insulating and heat-resistant material consists, such as. B. from mica flakes u-nd, 'or glass fibers, which are held together by means of a thermoset. The suspension can be applied to one or both surfaces of the support by means of printing or spraying in several separate layers 2. Connecting strip. <B> 3 </B> and 4, e.g. B. made of zinc, between the layers 2 z. B. applied by spraying onto the base <B> 1 </B>.
The base <B> 1 </B> prepared in this way is then dried and heated to 4000. Then it is immersed in a thermoset precondensate, such as. B. that under the name Säicone Resin No. 2104 (catalyzed by Midland Silicones Ltd. is brought into the trade, and air dried.
Then one or more protective layers <B> 6, </B>, also made of a glass fiber fabric or Mikaflock: .en and / or glass fibers and impregnated with the same synthetic resin, are applied to the base, <B> 1 </B> and glued under a pressure of <B> 1 </B> kg / CM2 at 17511 for <B> 30 </B> minutes.
The heating element can be glued and hardened in a press, whereby this heating element can be given any desired shape.
Any desired specific resistance can be obtained within wide limits by applying a certain number of layers of the suspension to the substrate <B> 1 </B>. Furthermore, by changing the quantity ratio of Me tall. to carbon in the suspension the temperature coefficient of the resistivity of the support layer can be made negative, zero or positive.
