Abstract

859,811. Nuclear reactors. ENGLISH ELECTRIC CO. Ltd. May 8, 1957 [May 11, 1956], No. 14807/56. Class 39(4). A control element 11 for a nuclear reactor is biased (by gravity) to the shut-down position with a winding cable so wound on a reel 12 that the reel radius at which it is wound increases as the element is withdrawn from the reactor core. A free wheel device fitted in the hub of the reel 12 couples the reel to a synchronous motor but allows this motor to run free when the control element has descended rapidly driving the de-energized motor and is then stopped. When the element 11 is thus stopped, by the cable unwinding to an anchor pin 12d a sheave 16 stresses a torsion spring 19 and allows the cable to straighten, from the position B to position C, returning to B as permitted by a dash-pot 20.
