835,448. Controlling nuclear reactors. BRITISH THOMSON-HOUSTON CO. Ltd. Dec. 6, 1957 [Dec. 6, 1956], No. 37359/56. Class 39(4). [Also in Group XXX] Winding cam 2 is secured to winding drum WD so as to make a plurality of turns therewith during a complete wind. Programme cam 1 is driven by said winding drum WD through reduction gearing RG so as to indicate the position of the wind by a turn of less than 360 degrees. Detent 3 is biassed at end 50 against the surface of cam 1. Operation. When the cable has wound off the winding drum to the extent required and the load (e.g. control rod of a nuclear reactor) has been lowered to the position required, indentation 6 on cam 1 has moved round towards the detent 3 so that the end 50 of the detent falls into the indentation. This permits detent 3 to rotate and to cause its end 51 to move towards cam 2. The detent 3 thus engages stop surface 7 of the cam 2 during the next revolution of the latter cam. This stops the unwinding of the cable at the predetermined limit. A second system of detent, indentation and stop surface may be used to limit the wind in the reverse direction.
