A reactor control rod winding-mechanism comprises a fixed multiple pulley block 16, a movable multiple pulley block 15, an actuator 25 for moving the block 15, and a rope 26 passing round the blocks, fastened at one end and attached to a control rod at the other; movement of the block 15 produces a magnified movement of the control rod. The rope is guided by pulleys through a tortuous passage in a concrete shield member 28.
