Abstract
1,035,747. Reactor control rods. COMMIS. SARIAT A L'ENERGIE ATOMIQUE. April 9, 1965 [April 15, 1964], No. 15235/65. Heading G6C. A nuclear reactor articulated control member is formed of absorber plates hinged together to form a linear series which may be extended or contracted vertically, lengthwise along the series, about the hinges. The degree of extension determines the amount of absorber material inside the reactor core and hence the degree of reactivity. The control member and the associated winch motor are mounted on a plug slidable within an aperture in the biological shield. When fully extended, the plates are shaped to permit the edges of plates in adjacent series to engage and to thus form a succession of frusto-pyramids. The downward motion is damped at the fully extended position, by the winch mechanism.
