Abstract
Compacted metal powder formed from a mixture of powders capable of passing through a 12 mesh British Standard sieve is enclosed in a ductile metal sheath, heated to a temperature below that at which rapid interdiffusion of the powders will occur and extruded through a die, the extrusion ratio being less than 10:1. The powder comprises 10% copper, 20-35 and preferably 28% nickel and the remainder titanium. The sheath is of copper or aluminium. Heating is performed in a furnace at a temperature of 400-500 DEG C. preferably 440 DEG C. and the compact is extruded through a die at a pressure of 110 tons per square inch and with an extrusion ratio of between 100:1 and 200:1, preferably 144:1, to produce a rod. After removal of the sheath by nitric acid the rod is used as a welding or brazing rod.
