Abstract
1,081,896. Forging; extruding; altering physical structure. COMMISSARIAT A L' ENERGIE ATOMIQUE. Aug. 20, 1964 [Aug. 20, 1963], No. 31844/64. Headings B3H, B3P and B3V. A metal workpiece (1) is shaped in a die or container (6), Fig. 1 (not shown), whilst subjected to a high hydrostatic restraining pressure by a second more ductile metal (7) which is rendered plastic by pressure transmitted through the workpiece (1) and which is allowed to escape from the container through a calibrated orifice (8). The latter may be adjustable. The workpiece (1) may be of beryllium and the second metal of lead, aluminium, copper or pure iron. In other embodiments, Figs. 2, 3 (not shown), the workpiece 1 is upset whilst surrounded by the ductile metal. Billets are consolidated by the invention which may be combined with annealing operations.
