Abstract

848,269. Beryllium articles; cupping; working at specified temperatures. UNITED KINGDOM ATOMIC ENERGY AUTHORITY. March 20, 1959 [March 25, 1958], No. 9453/58. Classes 83 (2) and 83 (4). A method of forming beryllium comprises supporting the beryllium by a ductile metal backing-member and forming the supported beryllium at a temperature at which the beryllium adheres, but does not become welded to the backing-member during the forming operation. The ductile backing-member is approximately twice the thickness of the beryllium and may be of mild steel. The forming, e.g. cupping, is carried out at a temperature between 630‹ and 670‹ C. The backing may also be of aluminium and the forming temperature about 300‹ C. The backing is removed from the formed article by slightly deforming or tapping the backing.
