Abstract
858,563. Lapping bearing races. ROTOL Ltd. Feb. 27, 1959 [Feb. 27, 1958], No. 6455/58. Class 60. A method of reconditioning thrust bearing races comprises lapping the track surface using felt laps mounted on a rigid backing. A taperedroller thrust - bearing race 18 is supported by a base 11 and clamped thereon by a ring 20. The roller track surface 19 is lapped by zinc lapping pads 25 in dovetail slots 26 in a lap holder 27. The pads are of hard yet slightly resilient felt, and lapping compound mixed with a light oil to form a paste is applied to the track surface. The lap holder 27 is detachably secured to a member 30 pivotally connected to a spindle 38 with a taper shank 40. The member 30 has a spigot 36 which engages a bush 15 in the base 11. The spindle 38 may be rotated by the chuck of a vertical drilling machine and the base 11 held stationary on the work table. Alternatively the base 11 may be rotated by the face plate of a lathe and the spindle 38 held against rotation in the tailstock. Various modifications are described.
